HAL names new ship ‘ms Koningsdam’
Holland America Line has unveiled the name for its new ship expected to enter service in February 2016.
The new 99,500-ton, 2,650-passenger ship will be named ms Koningsdam, in honor of King Willem-Alexander, the first king of the Netherlands in over a century.
Several HAL ships have been christened by members of the Dutch royal family.
In 2008, ms Eurodam was christened by Queen Beatrix, and Princess Maxima christened the last new ship – ms Nieuw Amsterdam – in 2010.
ms Koningsdam will be a new type of ship for Holland America Line, and HAL is working with acclaimed designer Adam D. Tihany to create the interiors.
The new ‘Pinnacle’ class ship will have more public spaces and venues and will be its largest ever vessel the cruise line said.
"This new Pinnacle Class ship will be our largest, most contemporary vessel, and it was only fitting to give it a name that embodies great achievement for the future, while embracing timeless tradition," said Stein Kruse, CEO of the Holland America Group.
