HAL ship outbreak sickens dozens
A fourth Holland America Line ship has suffered an outbreak in just the last few weeks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed a norovirus outbreak on the Volendam ship which was reported last week and has sickened 60 guests and crew members.
It follows outbreaks on Eurodam, Rotterdam and Zuiderdam since early December.
Overall, it was the third outbreak so far this year.
The ship was carrying 1,369 guests on a three-week Caribbean cruise.
According to the CDC the main symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea.
HAL said cases were ‘mostly mild and quickly resolved.’
“We initiated enhanced sanitation protocols to minimize further transmission, including continuous disinfection of the ship,” HAL said.
Affected guests and crew were isolated.
The CDC says outbreaks tend to be more common during winter months.
