Half-dozen North American cities seen as emerging destinations
Six areas from North America were among a dozen identified as “surprising, thriving or emerging” travel destinations by travel book guide Frommer’s.
Two were Portlands — both Maine and Oregon.
Portland Maine was seen as having a “fantastic mix of culture and education….with first-rate restaurants.” And though it has extreme weather, it is seen as an “eminently walkable city with a compact downtown area.”
Portland, Oregon is ranked high for its “excellent outdoor adventure opportunities.”
Frommer’s said: “Along the riverfront is one of only three US-based sake manufacturers, in which you can tour the facility and participate in a sake tasting.” …Foodies are discovering the area.”
Minneapolis, Minnesota was praised for having a “gorgeous city layout and fine art community.”
Small-town Asheville, North Carolina, was hailed as a college town with a “thriving arts, culture, and gay and lesbian scene.”
Glen Canyon, Utah, home of Lake Powell, offers a “huge recreation area, including house boating, fishing and water skiing.”
The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia was highly rated for being “Napa North” or “the Tuscany of Canada.” The area has a “mild climate with rolling hills and a growth of plentiful fruits, nuts, and grapes.”
