Hawaii volcano eruption forces evacuations
Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano eruption has sparked the evacuation of 1,500 residents so far on the Big Island.
The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where Kilauea is located remains open but an area of about 15,000 acres near to the volcano was closed off.
The Kalapan visitor viewing point is off-limits.
An eruption was imminent after hundreds of earthquakes were recorded on the Big Island over the past few days.
Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
It is still early to say how significant any travel disruption will be but Hawaiian Airlines is taking no chances and issuing travel waivers.
Other airlines including United Airlines, American and Alaska Airlines have not yet updated their travel advisories.
The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) updated its advisory for all British travelers to follow instructions of local authorities and monitor local news.
It is still unclear how severe the disruption will be.
"USGS volcanologists are on the ground and we are monitoring the situation 24/7. How the eruption proceeds from this point is yet to be seen.… It just depends upon whether there is enough magma in the system to keep on supplying what’s been coming out of the surface," said U.S. Geological Survey volcanologist Wendy Stovall.
