Hawaiian Airlines mourns veteran flight attendant who died mid-flight
Hawaiian Airlines identified and paid tribute to the flight attendant who died aboard a New York bound flight.
Emile Griffith was a 30-year Hawaiian Airlines veteran, the carrier said.
He collapsed and went into cardiac arrest during the flight, but could not be saved despite repeated resuscitation attempts.
"We are forever grateful for Emile’s colleagues and good Samaritans on board who stayed by his side and provided extensive medical help," said airline spokesperson Ann Botticelli.
"Emile both loved and treasured his job at Hawaiian and always shared that with our guests. Our hearts are with Emile’s family, friends and all those fortunate to have known him."
The flight carrying 253 passengers and 12 crewmembers was diverted to San Francisco.
A doctor and a paramedic stepped in to help after a call was made onboard for assistance.
Passengers were kept on the plane for nearly two hours waiting for a coroner to arrive.
They were thanked by the airline for their patience and were later re-accommodated on other flights.
All will receive compensation, Hawaiian said.
