Heathrow cancels flights amid baggage handling meltdown
Heathrow has asked airlines to cancel dozens of flights due to the ongoing baggage handling chaos
A glitch at the weekend left planes departing without passengers’ luggage and a mountain of bags piling up at the airport.
It asked airlines to cancel about 10% of flights on Monday to help it manage the backlog.
It will affect up to 15,000 holidaymakers.
British Airways, Aer Lingus and Lufthansa were ordered to cut flights.
“We’re in contact with affected customers to apologise, advise them of their consumer rights and offer them alternative options, including a refund or rebooking,” a BA spokesperson said.
The baggage system at Terminal 2 failed.
Heathrow said it was a ‘technical issue’ and not a worker shortage.
“We apologise unreservedly for the disruption passengers have faced over the course of this weekend.”
“The technical issues led to us making the decision to request airlines operating in Terminals 2 and 3 to consolidate their schedules, the airport said.
