Help for tourism in flood-ravaged Hunter
The Hunter Regional Tourism Organisation will receive funding of $499,500 for a tourism project to help the flood-hit region attract more tourists.
The Hunter Regional Tourism Organisation project will focus on increasing consumer awareness of the attractions in this World Heritage-listed area. A branding campaign will be funded to encourage more tourists to explore the beautiful Barrington Tops region.
“The recent heavy rains, while very welcome in some areas, have left certain parts of the Hunter in pretty dire straits through flooding,” Fran Bailey, Minister for Small Business and Tourism, said today.
“This initiative will help attract more tourists to the Hunter, helping to provide an economic stimulus to local tourism operators and small businesses.”
The funding was provided under the Australian Tourism Development Program, which supports innovative and regional tourism projects.
“Every additional tourism dollar we attract to our regions creates more jobs for Australians,” Fran Bailey said.
“Tourism is an $81 billion industry, creating jobs for half a million Australians and earning $20.5 billion in exports each year. Last year, overseas visitors poured an extra $1.8 billion into our economy.”
Other New South Wales projects being funded, include:
** Peak Health Partners Pty Ltd, in Wyong Creek — and $100,000 to develop a panel maze and traditional rustic barn at OziMaze in the Yarralong Valley on the Central Coast.
** Canopy 01 Pty Ltd, in Knights Hill — $100,000 for the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk, where tourists will experience a 500m-long, 20m-30m high treetop canopy walk 45m above the forest floor.
