Hertz brings biometric scanning to airport car rentals

Friday, 12 Dec, 2018 0

Hertz is the latest travel firm to make use of facial scanning biometric tech.

The company is the first in the car rental industry to adopt biometric verification, which it hopes will speed up the pickup of rental cars at airports.

Hertz teamed up with biometric screening machine maker Clear, starting at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

It will be rolled out to about 40 more Hertz locations next year, including San Francisco, LAX and New York JFK airports.

Customers simply pick up their vehicles and are then verified on exit with cameras and touchscreens that scan a face or fingerprints.

The exit gates open when data is matched with the reservation details.

"In the world of travel, I think time is of the essence," said Hertz president and CEO Kathy Marinello. "Hertz Fast Lane service reduces the checkout process to just 30 seconds or less."
