Hey big spender… come to Belgium!
British travellers spend more per night when they are Belgium than in any other country – but they only stay there for two nights on average.
That was the finding of the Office for National Statistics in its annual Travel Trends study, which found that British travellers spend an average of £103 per day while the are in the country.
The survey revealed that leisure visitors spend £72 per day, while business travellers spend £155 per day.
The Daily Telegraph, reporting the story, quotes a spokesman for the ONS as saying: “Visits to Belgium are not all by holidaymakers and booze cruisers. Because of the European Union, Brussels is a significant destination for business people.”
There were, however, 437,000 day trips made by British travellers to Belgium in 2003.
Travel Trends also reportedly discovered that Spain was the most popular destination, with 13.8 million visits, followed by France with 12 million.
British travellers made 61.4 million trips abroad and spent £28.6 billion; this was six per cent more than they spent in 2002.
