Hijack ends on runway at Key West
United States: Man arrested as soon as plane arrives from Cuba
A hijacker who took over a Cuban passenger plane has been arrested after flying the plane to Florida.
As reported by News From Abroad, the hijacker got on the flight at Nueva Gerona airport and tried to force the pilot to fly to the United States, but the plane had to land at Havana airport because of a lack of fuel.
After a 12-hour stand-off during which several women and children were released, the plane was refuelled and took off once again. The Cubana plane landed safely at Key West airport with 31 people on board, and was immediately surrounded by armed police.
Within an hour, reports say, all of the passengers were off the plane and the alleged hijacker, who was thought to have been carrying at least one hand grenade, was in custody.
