Hijacked aircraft stranded on runway
Cuba: Man with hand grenades wanted to fly to United States, say reports
A hijack appears to have taken place on a Cuban airliner en-route to the United States, after a man carrying hand grenades boarded the flight.
Reports suggest the hijacker got on the flight at Nueva Gerona airport and tried to force the pilot to fly to the United States, but the plane had to land at Havana airport because of a lack of fuel. At present the plane is reported to be on the runway at Havana, with some 46 other people on board, while negotiations continue.
The hijacking comes just two weeks after alleged Cuban asylum seekers hijacked a Douglas DC-3 at knifepoint with 36 passengers on board and forced the pilot to fly to Key West, Florida. They were arrested when the plane landed but have since been bailed pending charges.
