Holidaymaker drowns at Canary Island beach resort
A British holidaymaker has drowned after ignoring red warning flags to stay out of the water in a popular Lanzarote beach resort.
Lifeguards on the Playa Blanca beach in the resort of Puerto del Carmen pulled the 44-year-old man from the sea on Saturday.
He was pronounced dead despite paramedics trying to resuscitate him for 40 minutes.
A spokesman for Emerlan, the island’s volunteer emergency service, told the Daily Mail:
"My understanding is he was on holiday and the tragedy happened in front of his wife and children but we do not have any more details."
Red flags mean swimming is forbidden and witnesses described the sea as "very rough".
