Honeymooners shun the beach

Thursday, 05 Jun, 2008 0

The traditional two-week loved-up honeymoon on the beach is old-fashioned and fills most couples with dread, according to a teletext.co.uk survey.

Instead, 21st century newly-weds are opting to take city breaks, adventures holidays,a  cruise or simply stay in the UK.

More than 2000 British honeymooners took part in the survey which found that four in five did not choose the honeymoon so beloved of their parents. Some 58% said it was passé and 56% said being surrounded by other couples “filled them with dread”.

But the new outlook on celebrating a marriage doesn’t come cheap. The average honymoon in 2008 costs £2,580, with most of that spent on flights (£1,029) and accommodation (£1,008). They also take, on average, £922 in spending money.

And perhaps a little worryingly for the marriages of the future, some 43% said it was important to have organized activities ahead of the trip to pass the time.
