Hong Kong agents cancel tours to Thailand

HONG KONG – Hong Kong travel agents have called off all tours to Thailand that were due to start today in response to the deteriorating security situation in Bangkok.

Hong Kong Travel Industry Council executive director Joseph Tung said eight tours involving 166 people were cancelled under Hong Kong’s red outbound travel alert for Thailand.

“We fear clients will be gravely concerned about the situation,” he said.

The Hong Kong Standard said tour operators affected are Hong Thai, Wing On Travel, Kwan Kin Tours, Miramar Travel and Sunflower Travel.

Travel agencies will decide today whether or not to cancel tours due to start tomorrow.

Other Hong Kong holidaymakers on 31 tours in Thailand will continue with their itineraries, Tung said.

Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Singaporeans who do not have a pressing need to travel to Bangkok and other areas where a state of emergency has been declared to postpone their trip to a later date.

Both the UK and Australia have re-issued their travel advice for Thailand following the declaration of a state of emergency in Bangkok, but have not raised the overall threat level to visitors.

Australia continues to urge a “high degree of caution”.
