Hong Kong Airlines suspending San Francisco flights
Struggling Hong Kong Airlines will halt service to San Francisco from October 5.
The route, which launched less than two years ago, will be scrapped following a ‘market review.’
Customers with confirmed flights after this date will be offered alternative arrangements, which include rerouting on other HK Airlines services or transferring to flights operated by other partner carriers.
Full refunds will also be given on request.
"For North American flights, even airlines like Cathay face a lot of pressure so we keep reviewing. Our North American flights will be our short-term focus that we need to consolidate," Ricky Chong Wai-ki, HK Airlines director of corporate governance and development recently said.
The airline is feeling the heat of competition as United Airlines recently announced a second non-stop service on the route, while Cathay Pacific operates three times a day to San Francisco.
There has been no announcement yet of any upcoming changes to HK Airlines’ other North American routes to Vancouver and Los Angeles.
The airline is owned by Chinese conglomerate HNA Group which is still mired in billions of dollars of debt.
