Hong Kong Airport selling off abandoned plane

Wednesday, 14 May, 2019 0

Hong Kong’s Airport Authority is looking to get rid of a rusting jet which has stood idle in a hangar for years.

It wants to shift the 27-year-old Boeing 767 for a cut-price US$795,000.

The Transaero jet landed at the airport back in 2015 just ar the airline collapsed, and has been stranded ever since.

It turned out to be the airline’s last flight.

Airport Authority officials say there are no maintenance records for the plane and it is unlikely to fly again without substantial work.

The plane was impounded for non-payment of airport fees and the authority has now secured a court order to sell the jet in a ‘as-is’ condition.

Former aircraft leasing executive Peter Huijbers, reckons it is a bad deal considering there are no maintenance records and it would take ‘substantial money’ to bring back into service.

Even the value of spare parts may not cover the purchase cost.

"The requested deposit would, in my view, only be sensible if the engines can be brought back to life. Even if the airframe and gear are serviceable, it would have a value less than the deposit," said Huijbers, who runs PH Aviation Asia.
