Hong Kong, here I come: AirAsia
KUALA LUMPUR – AirAsia, Asia’s largest low-cost carrier, is expected to fly from the Malaysian capital to Hong Kong by January 2008, three years after it launched flights to Macau, its first destination in China.
The LCC’s decision to fly to Macau instead of Hong Kong then was due to the former’s lower airport charges.
Media reports quoted AirAsia’s group CEO Dato’ Tony Fernandes as saying: “We are applying to fly to Hong Kong now. I have been against Hong Kong all this time, but it has reached a point now where I’ve got a deal out of Hong Kong with its new CEO and we want to build our low-cost terminal hub.”
On February 1 Stanley Hui Hon-Chung, formerly Dragonair’s CEO, was appointed as Hong Kong’s as new CEO effective Feb 1 and this was believed to have influenced AirAsia’s change of heart to fly to Hong Kong.
