Hong Kong launching major cycling event
The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has announced a major cycling event on the streets of Hong Kong later this year.
The first ever ‘Sun Hung Kai Properties Hong Kong Cyclothon’ will take place on October 10 and 11, featuring a series of cycling races, activities, and a carnival.
Many of the races are recognised by the Union Cycliste Internationale, and will be contested by professional riders from around the world.
Additionally other races will be staged for cyclists of all levels.
Notably the 35 km Challenge Ride will see the Tsing Ma Bridge opened for the first time for a cycling event.
"The sport of cycling has caught on in Hong Kong in recent years, with many cyclists from the city earning international recognition. By staging the Cyclothon, the HKTB wants to reinforce Hong Kong’s standing as Asia’s events capital," said Dr Peter Lam, chairman of the HKTB.
"In the long run, we hope to expand the scale so that it will become a major annual event in the Pearl River Delta region when the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is completed."
The Cyclothon has a total of eight different race categories with professional races taking place on Saturday October 10 while amateur cyclists compete in races such as the 10km Community Ride, Family Fun Ride and Kids & Youth Rides the following day.
Enrolment for the races and activities begins this Saturday July 25 and will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
Live music, food stalls and other cylying theme activities will take place over the two days.
