Hoots Mon – it’s the Mac-Austrian Games!
Tourists visiting the small Austrian town of Voitsberg will be forgiven for believing they have landed in the wrong country if they turn up there towards the end of this month.
Greissenberg Castle is set to play host to Voitsberg’s own version of Scotland’s Highland Games, Ananova reports.
The castle’s park will be transformed into an arena where events like tossing the caberwill be held, together with a few homegrown Autrian innovations, including Free Country, a game which involves competitors throwing and catching hen’s eggs.
The games take place on June 26-27 and are masterminded by local resident Helmut ‘McShuly’ Schulhofer, who refers to them as “Celtic Highland Games accompanied by original Scottish bagpipe music”.
All competitors, male and female, must wear kilts, which can be borrowed on site if needed, Ananova says.
