Hotel evacuated in Portugal fires has re-opened

A hotel that was forced to close in the recent Portugal mountain fires has re-opened.

Guests had to be evacuated from the Macdonald Monchique Resort & Spa earlier this month when fires swept across the region.

The fires were fully extinguished at the end of last week and hotel staff returned last weekend to make the final preparations.

A statement today said there was no damage to the hotel.

"Before staff departed the resort on August 6, we took many steps to prevent damage to the property and as a result it has not been affected by the fire. We also set up call line for guests to provide a point of contact for any needs," it said.

"We would like to thank the Portuguese fire service for their heroic work in containing the fires and we can confidently say that there is no cause for concern for those who choose Monchique as a holiday destination. We would also like to thank our guests who have been incredibly understanding and we are very grateful for their support and cooperation. We look forward to welcoming more visitors to our wonderful resort."
