Hotelier reports bookings have more than doubled

Staycations are here to stay according to hotel operator De Vere Village Urban Resorts.

With the peak summer season about to commence, the group has seen a dramatic increase in the number of UK summer break bookings compared to last year, showing that holidaymakers have redeemed their faith in the great British weather.

De Vere Village Urban Resorts has seen a 110% increase in advance bookings for the summer period, compared with 2012, with most people opting for two-night breaks and weekend getaways.

While traditional UK break destinations such as Blackpool are still drawing in the crowds, city breaks are on the up with Newcastle and Leeds also topping the list for room bookings.

De Vere Hotels and Village Urban Resorts chief executive Robert Cook said: "There is an increasing trend for group bookings, with more Brits taking breaks with their friends and families.

Newcastle is becoming a more popular destination for hen and stag dos because of the great nightlife and hotel prices are becoming more competitive with European locations that were once seen as a cheap option.

"We’ve seen a lot of growth this year from early bookings.  Since Easter and the end of the poor weather we’ve seen guests have been planning their summer breaks and this has driven the tremendous growth in advance bookings we’ve experienced."
