Hotels unite for environmental responsibility
Hundreds of hotels across the globe are expected this month to take part in a scheme to encourage social and environmental responsibility.
The Hotels Environment Action Month (HEAM) is aimed at educating hotel staff about better environmental practices, including evaluating the success of various schemes around the world. These include programmes such as Accor’s waste treatment centre for its hotels in Brazil, or Four Seasons’ recycling initiatives at its Palm Beach resort in Florida.
Last year 700 hotels around the world took part in HEAM including properties from groups such as Starwood and Radisson SAS. HEAM not only encourages better practice, but encourages hotel staff to involve more stakeholders in activities. This includes local communities and guests.
Starwood Hotels and Resorts EMEA vice president, Even Frydenberg said: “It is only by measuring what we do, the results achieved, and communicating the same, that we can continue to improve our performance as a socially responsible company.”
HEAM is organised by the International Tourism Partnership’s International Hotels Environment Initiative, which was set up in 1992. For more information go to www.internationaltourismpartnership.org.
