Almost three quarter of Britons expect to spend £1,700 or more on holiday travel in 2010.
A new study found that 71% of travellers will spend that amount, with more than a quarter (28%) spending more than £5,300.
Sixteen per cent of travellers will book their holiday earlier than this year.
The findings come from a poll of more than 700 people by TripAdvisor which also highlighted concerns about additional flight costs.
Almost three quarters of those asked said they were “surprised” by their final flight price, up five per cent from a survey conducted in September.
TripAdvisor’s annual travel trend survey also found that travellers are unable to predict the final cost of their flight, with nearly one-third paying unexpected additional costs at check-in.
Additionally, 32% have checked in at an airport and paid additional costs they were not expecting – up 18 percent from three months ago,.

Ryanair was ranked as travellers’ least favourite airline for the fourth year in a row; this time by 41%, up from 30% last year.
Virgin Atlantic was rated the favourite carrier for the second year running, followed by British Airways and Singapore Airlines.
Eighty-two percent of travellers said that the brand of airline is at least “somewhat important” when making a booking decision, with 41% identifying it as very or extremely important.
But the most important factor is price followed by preferred route. Twenty-three percent are willing to fly the same airline, if it’s the cheapest option, even after a really bad experience on a flight.
Fourteen per cent of British travellers will be more environmentally conscious in their travel decisions in 2010 than they were this year.
The most suitable country to plan an eco-friendly holiday is Sweden, followed by Norway and Switzerland. One-fifth of travellers said there are not enough resources to easily plan an eco-friendly holiday.
More than three quarters of British travellers will visit a historic site in the next year, 68% are likely to visit a national park and over half (52%) will go to the theatre or opera. Nearly one-quarter (22%) are likely to attend a festival and 27% will go hiking.

Additionally:
*Fifteen percent have taken slippers from a hotel room, while 10% have taken a washcloth and nine per cent towels.
*Thirty-three percent would do a holiday "house swap" if given the right opportunity.

*Perhaps because of its implementation at some U.K. airports in the past year, only 67% are comfortable with the new body scanners, compared to 80% last year.
*Rude seat recliners (33%) and children kicking the back of seats (32%) top the traveller faux pas on board a flight.
