Kenya: Restaurant in capital city enters the world’s top 50

Visitors to Nairobi will no doubt be delighted to hear that the city now has one of the top 50 restaurants in the world.

Carnivore, which serves up such delights as zebra, giraffe, crocodile and warthog, is the first African restaurant to make it on to the prestigious list, compiled by the London-based Restaurant magazine in collaboration with a panel of international reviewers.

According to the BBC News website, meat is “cooked on Maasai spears over a huge charcoal pit that dominates the entrance to the restaurant” – a feature likely to have caught the judges attention.

The head chef Joseph Gacheru told the website: “Carnivore is totally different because of the kitchen. When the guests are coming in that is the first impression they see – the kitchen and the meat being roasted there.”

The restaurant has been very popular with both tourists and locals, though business with foreign visitors has dropped off in recent months because of the general slump in travel.
