Huge waves to hit Hawaii
The biggest waves for 10 years are forecast to hit Hawaii over the next few days according to the National Weather Service.
It said waves of up to 50 feet are expected off the north shore of Oahu from today with a high-surf advisory in effect until the weekend.
It also included the north shore of Maui, the west shore of Big Island, and the north and west shores of Kauai and Molokai as potential impact points.
Forecasters say "giant breaking surf and coastal inundation" are probable brought on by a large northwest swell.
A big wave surf contest which was due to take place today in Oahu has been postponed due to the adverse wind conditions.
Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater was due to make an appearance at the event.
There is concern that exposed beachfront homes and businesses could be at risk of flood damage and American Red Cross officials say it has volunteers and supplies ready to assist homeowners.
Maui emergency management officer Anna Foust advised residents to be cautious and said beach parks will be closed where necessary.
