Human remains found near LaGuardia Airport

Earlier this week, maintenance workers at New York’s LaGuardia Airport discovered what has been described as  human "skeletal remains" beyond the airport perimeter fence.

In an interview with TravelMole, Port Authority press spokesperson Al Della Fave said that the workers noticed weeds were growing high at the water’s edge near an area called Riker’s Island Channel.  When they chopped down the weeds, they found the skeletal remains.

The New York Police Department was called and the area was investigated.  The remains were sent to the medical examiner, who has not identified the possible sex of the victim or how long the bones had been in the water or on the shore.  Tuesday, NBC News reported that they may have been in the marsh for up to a year.

Della Fave said that the likelihood that the bones washed up on shore is a possibility, given their location at the water’s edge.

Because the area was "well outside the airport perimeter fence," Della Fave suggested this is a police matter, rather than an airport security issue.

Since 2010, human remains of around a dozen victims have been found in coastal areas in Eastern Long Island.  The remains are being investigated as the work of a possible serial killer by local police.  Della Fave did not discount the possibility of a connection due to tidal flow in the waters around Long Island and Queens.
