Hundreds killed as Philippines hit by Typhoon Washi

More than 650 people have been killed – most of them children – and hundreds more are still missing after Typhoon Washi hit the Philippines.

Flash floods and winds of up to 56mph hit the island of Mindanao late on Friday leading to many domestic flights being grounded and areas left without power.

A Foreign Office warning said: “Flash floods on Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines have displaced large numbers of people, in particular in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro.

“Over 650 people are reported dead and 800 are missing.

“The FCO already advises against all travel to the region.  British nationals in the region should if possible contact friends and relatives to let them know that they are safe.”
