Hundreds of troops sent to Heathrow
UK: Army called up in “prudent” move to raise levels of security
Hundreds of army troops have been sent to Heathrow as part of the ongoing “fight against terror”.
As from 6am today, some 450 armed guards will be stationed at the airport to help police carry out their duties, in what authorities are referring to as a “prudent” move that also involves stationing troops in various locations across London.
Scotland Yard made the following statement: “From time to time it is necessary to raise levels of security. We think it is prudent to do so now. The current strengthening of security is precautionary and is related to action being taken in other countries and the possibility that the end of the religious festival of Eid may erroneously be used by Al-Qaida and associated networks to mount attacks.”
There will also be a small number of armoured vehicles stationed at the airport. The last time the army was drafted in to the airport was in 1994, when the IRA tried to carry out a mortar attack on Heathrow.
