Windows smashed as air – and good tempers – run out

Hundreds of passengers were trapped on a Eurostar train for five hours – just a few minutes after the service left Waterloo for Paris.

Furious passengers smashed windows to let in fresh air because the train’s ventilation system broke soon after the train stopped, and the customers were left hungry and thirsty because food and drink supplies ran out.

Some 600 people were on board the train, which was eventually towed back to Waterloo nearly six hours after it left the station – during which time there had been little or no communication between the train’s staff and passengers. They were all offered taxis back to their homes, accommodation in local hotels, and extra free tickets on Eurostar services for the future.

A spokesman told The Sunday Times: “We are sincerely sorry about the conditions on board the train. It was difficult for the train manager to communicate with passengers because the batteries had run low.”
