IHG team works to alleviate Cambodia poverty

SINGAPORE: Fourteen InterContinental Hotels Group employees and seven of their mates will head for Phnom Penh next week to work with the Friends of Tabitha charity project in Cambodia.

The charity supports local families living below the poverty line by providing them with new homes, water wells, piglets, and a savings programme.

The project has the support of A. Patrick Imbardelli, chief executive of IHG Asia Pacific, who was recently named “Hotelier of the Year 2006” at the 10th Asia Pacific Hotel Investment Conference, organised and hosted by Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels.

Imbardelli backs the fund-raising efforts of his team with a dollar-for-dollar contribution. This year, IHG employees have raised $10,000 for Tabitha-Cambodia, a sum that Imbardelli will match.

IHG support for the project includes a savings programme, which educates and encourages families to save their money in order to break the cycle of poverty. Through donations, Tabitha pays families 10% interest on savings every 10 weeks.

Donations are also used to buy piglets which can be raised by families and sold in a few months for eight to 10 times the purchase price.

Families who purchase a small tract of land and save US$50 towards materials are then helped by an IHG support team that funds the balance of the costs and then travels to Cambodia to build the houses.

Donations to a Family Partnership helps families to achieve four to six dream items – such as a child’s education – through interest payments on savings.

The IHG team leaving for Cambodia next week and will build 10 houses. The latest visit follows a similar Project Hammer house-building effort last year.
