‘In 12 years, I’ve never known such widespread discounting’

Customers dreaming of a white Christmas could find that a ski trip during the festive season is cheaper than ever this year as there are signs that tour operators are slashing prices due to a lack of bookings.

The slow start to the season has been attributed to the lack of snow last December, which has put customers off booking early this year, combined with the fact that Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, which is a travel day for many operators.

According to the ski website PlanetSKI.eu, prices have dropped to as low as £300 for a week’s skiing over Christmas.

It said French speciaist Ski Amis was offering  a week in a catered chalet, departing on December 19, at up to 50% off.

Flights are also being discounted, said PlanetSKI, which quoted Adam Johnson, sales director of ski agent Iglu saying that in 12 years in the business he’d never known such widespread discounting.

As Easter falls early this year and offers the promise of warmer, longer days, it seems those weeks are proving more popular with families than Christmas for a change, so if you’ve got clients looking for a bargain, advising them to take an early season trip could be the answer.
