Inca Trail rule change leads to booking frenzy

The Peruvian government is to announce new regulations restricting the number of people allowed to walk the famous Inca Trail. The number of people allowed to walk the trail, through the heart of the Peruvian Andes to the legendary hill-top citadel of Machu Picchu, has already been restricted to 500 a day – including guides, porters and cooks, as well as tourists. The Inca Trail is the most popular trekking destination in the whole of South America, and restrictions on the number of people allowed to use the trail are constantly reviewed by the Peruvian Government. Guerba Holidays, one of just 55 companies licensed to take trekkers on the trail, reports that is has seen a 200 per cent increase in inquiries about the Inca Trail. Ian Ripper, manager, said: “If you want to go on the Inca Trail then the message is book your place now or you may well be disappointed. “Individuals cannot trek independently, and already reservations are mandatory, and must be paid for in advance and accompanied by full passport information 30 days prior to departure. However, once people have booked, their place is guaranteed. “As a company committed to sustainable tourism, we understand that limiting the number of people on the Inca Trail at any one time is a responsible measure, but as a backpacker myself I do feel it is a shame that fewer backpackers will be able to see this breathtaking site.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad Ltd
