IndiGo, Qatar Airways refute joint bid for Air India
India’s largest airline by market share has moved to quash rumours it is in league with Qatar Airways to make a bid for debt-ridden Air India.
No discussions on a joint bid have taken place.
"While IndiGo normally doesn’t respond to rumours, in this particular instance, we would like to state that there are no ongoing discussions of this nature," the airline said, responding to speculative media reports.
The Gulf carrier also issued its own denial.
IndIGo however hasn’t officially ruled itself out of making a bid for the Maharajah, and is thought to be the domestic front-runner, and possibly the only one with the financial clout.
India’s Tata Group and Turkey’s Celebi Aviation Holdings are other entities which have confirmed an interest in snapping up AI’s airline business.
Air India has six main subsidiaries and assets of about $4.6 billion.
However debt has now grown to about double that.
