IndiGo to announce strategic tie-up with Qatar Airways
Shares in IndiGo parent company InterGlobe Aviation rose nearly 5% after the airline teased a imminent announcement of a strategic cooperation with Qatar Airways.
The airlines will make a joint announcement on November 7.
Qatar Air has made no secret of its interest in IndiGo and the Indian aviation market and even at one time contemplated setting up an Indian based airline.
"We are very interested in IndiGo. We are talking to IndiGo for doing codeshare, joint flights but not yet an equity stake in the airline," Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker told Reuters earlier this year.
However it is still unlikely that Qatar’s interest will result in any financial stake in India’s market leader and may just be restricted to a codesharing arrangement at this stage, according to local media reports.
IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta, and Al Baker would ‘talk about the vision and future for both the airlines’ they said in a statement.
Last week IndiGo placed a huge order for up to 300 Airbus A320 family aircraft.
