International tourism not matching US gains
The good news: tourism is up. The bad news: international tourism is not.
So said Travel Industry Association (TIA) President and CEO Roger Dow speaking to Central Florida tourism executives.
“New York, Las Vegas and Orlando are way ahead of everyone else” in numbers of tourism, he told the Orlando Business Journal.
But the increases have only brought the tourism industry nationwide back to where it was five years ago. And international tourism remains down 5%, he said.
Security measures after 9-11 are helping deter foreign tourists. Mr Dow also cited a perception abroad that Americans are rude to foreign tourists.
He says his goal is to attract national funding to counteract the negative image.
Another problem he cited that has come up in recent months is the predicted future collapse of America’s transportation system.
