Intrepid drops Burma

Tuesday, 26 Aug, 2003 0

Intrepid Travel has dropped Burma just weeks after saying it wouldn’t follow Kuoni’s lead in scrapping the destination.

The operator says that following a number of political arrests and asassinations it has decided to suspend operations “for the foreseeable future”.

In a statement Intrepid said: “Following the events of May 30 Intrepid have decided to suspend operations for the foreseeable future. On that day, several NLD supporters were killed and over 100 remain missing. Key NLD staff including Aung San Suu Kyi were arrested and remain so at the time of writing.”

Intrepid says customers with bookings can still travel but also have the option of getting a full refund.

In May the operator said it would continue to operate to Burma, despite Kuoni’s decision to pull out of the country. Intrepid had previously boycotted the destination since 1999. Its decision to return was announced in April 2003.
