Intrepid Group expands to Japan

Sunday, 30 Aug, 2017 0

The Intrepid Group has opened its first office in Japan to meet surging demand in the country.

Inbound tourism to Japan is up nearly 17% and will likely continue to rise especially with big numbers expected for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The new Kyoto office is operated under the PEAK DMC brand and will have a workforce of 20 local staff and guides.

It becomes Intrepid Group’s eighteenth destination management company and will offer itineraries to Japan’s most iconic sites as well as lesser known destinations.

"We’ve seen a huge appetite for a more sustainable and experiential style of travel globally, across all ages and budgets. One of the benefits of this style of travel is to bring tourism into smaller communities, which is increasingly important for preserving culture and natural beauty in a country like Japan where people are moving to into large cities," said CEO James Thornton.

Intrepid’s Japan itineraries unveiled include Ashaikawa’s ice festival, cycling in the Noto Peninsula and a food tour to Koya-san.

The Kyoto office is currently recruiting English-speaking locals for product, sales and tour leader positions.

"A great tour guide wants our travellers to experience all the things they love about their country. While travellers might go for a bucket-list experience, it is the local stories and authentic local experiences that truly connects travellers to the places they visit," said Joanna Crisp, general manager for the Intrepid Group office in Japan.
