Irishman on his honeymoon was killed in Greek wildfires
An Irishman on his honeymoon has been confirmed as one of the victims of the Greek wildfires as the death toll rises.
Latest reports say at least 81 people have lost their lives in the fires, which have devastated a number of Greek villages and holiday resorts.
Greek authorities have now begun the task of trying to identify those who lost their lives in the worst wildfires in the country’s recent history.
It is feared the final death toll could be more than 100.
Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp, a volunteer with a charity that transports medicines and supplies between hospitals in the Dublin region, was on honeymoon with his wife Zoe Holohan following their wedding a week earlier.
The couple became separated trying to escape the flames in the seaside resort of Mati.
In a statement, the two families said they were deeply saddened by his death and asked for privacy as the family grieves and ‘Zoe makes her recovery’. She is being treated in a nearby hospital.
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has declared three days of mourning.
