Is another volcano about to blow its top?

Saturday, 29 Nov, 2010 0

For airlines, 2010 may go down as the Year of the Volcano.

The latest smoker is Mt Bromo in Indonesia’s main island of Java.

One of Java’s most popular tourist attractions, Mt Bromo has come back to life after a yearlong lull, spewing a powerful blast of volcanic debris and forcing the closure of a local airport.

A volcanologist in Jakarta has warned a big eruption may be on the way.

Indonesia straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Recent eruptions from Mt Merapi in central Java, caused more than 300 deaths and forced the evacuation of thousands of villagers living nearby. The ash cloud also disrupted flights in the region.

For several days in April, flights in northern Europe were grounded as a cloud of ash and dust blasted out of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland and were blown around the continent.
