Is this Virgin on overkill?
UK: Now Sir Richard promises to win Tony Blair’s backing for Concorde bid
Virgin Atlantic boss Sir Richard Branson has vowed to take his attempts to take over the Concorde brand right to the top – by enlisting the help of the Prime Minister.
As reported by News From Abroad, British Airways has announced plans to retire the famous jet in the autumn, but seems less than keen for any other airline to have a go at running Concorde. However, this has not discouraged Sir Richard, who claims he could run the legendary jet at a profit – and even that he would run it as a loss-leader. Now the serial entrepreneur says he is planning “the strongest campaign we can” for the next few months.
The online news provider Ananova quotes Sir Richard thus: “At some stage I will go to Tony Blair with all the facts of the history of Concorde and we should start getting questions asked in the House of Commons. There are MPs fighting to keep Concorde flying. If you run the country and run the Government you can enact legislation to enable anything to happen and I think he would have the country behind him.”
