Israel to develop camping tourism
Israel’s Tourism Ministry is to fund development for more campsites in the country, spurred by a recent increase in local and foreign campers during the Passover holidays.
The Ministry said it will offer grants and financial incentives to entrepreneurs looking to establish campsites.
Many campgrounds around the country reported full occupancy during the holidays.
"We are not surprised by the demand for camping, which has become a hot trend not only in Israel but also around the world," said Tourism Ministry director-general Amir Halevy.
He also added that many foreign and domestic tourists combine a few nights camping in nature with a luxury hotel vacation.
The Ministry plans to provide separate campgrounds for young travelers and for families with young children, with facilities to cater to traditional campers and glamping enthusiasts.
Ministry officials said this is one of the key elements of a plan to "reduce the cost of vacationing in Israel."
Israel Nature and Parks Authority said over 1.5 million visitors visited the country’s national parks during Passover with Ein Gedi and Banias nature reserves, and the Golan Heights among the most popular.
