Italian airport closed after cargo plane overshoots runway and crashes into road
Ryanair has cancelled flights to and from Milan Bergamo after a DHL cargo plane overshot the runway and crashed into a road.
The airport was closed after the incident at 4am this morning (Friday).
Dramatic pictures showed the 737 wedged onto a road at the end of the runway.
The ASL Airlines Hungary Boeing 737-400 had left Paris Charles de Gaulle with two crew.
The Aviation Herald said it had landed in thunderstorms and poor weather and overran the runway.
It broke through the airport perimeter fence, a parking lot, a guardrail and came to a stop on road about 580 meters past the end of the runway.
The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
Ryanair said all affected customers will be notified by email and text of their options.
"We apologise for this closure, which is due to circumstances outside of our control, and further information will be available on the Ryanair.com website throughout the day," it said.
