The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) contributed an initial 670,000 euros to Yangon Region for the protection of Yangon’s heritage.

AICS will contribute technical assistance for the requalification of Yangon’s heritage under phase 1, as a Tourism and Cultural Heritage project.

"We invest 670,000 euros for the phase 1. We will give much more but it depends on how it is going. More funds can be allocated to restore the historical building," he said.

The funds are directed to the protection and requalification of the historical patrimony of downtown Yangon and capacity development for destination management of cultural sites in view of developing sustainable tourism strategies.

"Our main focus is to make Yangon a livable city and to continuously preserve its heritage. It is not enough to maintain only landmark buildings. We need to prepare and conserve roads and drains which require energy and electricity. "We can’t do it alone and it needs the involvement of other related departments. That is why we supported the funding. It would improve friendship between the two countries," Giorgio Aliberti, Italian Ambassador to Myanmar, said.

"It is a wide project preserving cultural heritage, which relates to the work of UNESCO. We help Myanmar; we help a few cities in Myanmar to join UNESCO’s world heritage lists. We are working together now in Bagan and Mrauk-U
