Italy, Si, say Americans
American travelers asked where in the world outside the US they want to vacation without worrying about the cost have a simple answer: Italy.
So says Harris Interactive. That’s the same answer for two years in a row and Italy has ranked as either the first or second choice of Americans for the past eight years.
“This year Great Britain comes in the poll’s second spot, followed by Australia in third,” says the poll.
This is the lowest ranking Australia has seen since this question was first asked in 1997.
Last year and in 2008, Australia was second on the list and every other year until now it has been first. Rounding out this year's top five are Ireland (four) and France (five).
Greece holds steady at its sixth ranking, the same as last year, while Spain has become slightly more popular, moving up from ninth last year, and 10th before that, to seventh this year.
Germany dropped from a tie for sixth last year to eight this year, and Japan dropped one spot to number nine, a slight decrease given the earthquake and tsunami that country experienced earlier this year.
