Ivan strikes the Caribbean
Dozens of Caribbean islands have been hit by the Hurricane Ivan, with Grenada having already been pummelled and Jamaica bracing itself for the arrival of the category four storm.
According to the BBC News website, the home of Grenada’s prime minister has been “flattened” by the 120mph winds with trees and power lines reported to have been blown over all across the island.
The BBC states that the centre of the hurricane moved over the island yesterday evening, quoting one meteorologist as saying: “Grenada felt the full brunt of this storm. Ivan’s eye was split in half over the island.”
Latest predictions say that the storm will probably track westwards towards Jamaica and then into the Gulf of Mexico, possibly affecting south-eastern part of Mexico and the island of Cuba.
Authorities in Florida are also keeping a close eye on the hurricane’s path, as they continue the clear-up operation in the wake of Hurricane Frances.
