Jamaica cruise port to get walk-through Ebola sensor

Thursday, 30 Oct, 2014 0

Jamaica is ramping up its Ebola screening with the installation of a thermal-sensing unit at the Falmouth cruise ship complex in Trelawny.

The equipment has been donated by Jamaican gaming firm Supreme Ventures along with Ebola kits with bio-hazard materials and surgical aprons.

Supreme Ventures will also fund training for screening staff.

"Clearly, we understood that we cannot only focus on the airports, but the cruise ship ports. It is worthy of note that, while Ebola is the clear and present danger, we cannot overlook the reality of SARS, Avian flu, and swine flu, all of which are also capable of being detected by the thermal sensing unit being donated," said Supreme Ventures’ CEO Brian George.

"We are very pleased with the overall response that is coming in and we have to be very clear, while we have no direct flights from any of the affected countries to Jamaica, as it is now, we are seeing Ebola emerging in the United States, in Spain, and we do significant business and travel," said Jamaica’s health minister Dr Fenton Ferguson.

"Our response must be heightened, especially at our points of entry."

Government officials have not yet said whether the screening process will be risk-based or universal for all arriving cruise passengers.
