Japan could implement TB testing for inbound arrivals

Japan plans to bring back mandatory health screening for arriving travellers.

It is not bringing back Covis-19 testing but for pre-arrival tuberculosis screening.

Officials may implement tuberculosis screening for long staying travelers from six countries, health minister Keizo Takemi said.

These are China, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines and Vietnam.

These countries have the most travellers diagnosed with TB when in Japan.

TB testing could be implemented from next fiscal year, the minister said.

“We are making final arrangements to start the TB testing system next year,” Takemi said.

It would apply to travellers staying three months or longer in Japan, which are mostly for work or study programmers.

TB is the second biggest infectious killer after Covid, according to the World Health Organization.

It claimed 1.3 million lives last year.
