Japan on show at Sydney travel XPO
SYDNEY – One geisha and two apprentice geisha from Japan’s ancient capital, Kyoto, will be guests at the Japan stand at the Sydney Travel XPO at Sydney Exhibition Centre on March
14 – 15.
The geisha (called geiko in Kyoto) and two maiko (geisha-in-training) who are known in the geisha world as Hinagiku, Miharu and Kanoka, respectively, are traditional entertainers from Kyoto’s famous Gion district.
Hinagiku started her career as a maiko in 1999 before becoming a geiko in 2004. Miharu has been a maiko since October 2005 while Kanoka began her career more recently in October 2007.
The trio will be at the Japan stands located at D25 and D26 at the XPO on both Saturday and Sunday.
Hinagiku, Miharu and Kanoka will be promoting their hometown of Kyoto and having photographs taken with visitors.
The trio will take to the stage in the XPO’s entertainment space at 1:00pm to entertain visitors with a traditional Japanese dance performance lasting 20 minutes.
The XPO’s Japan stands will comprise of seven exhibitors with the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), JTB Oceania International, Japan Airlines, Kyoto and Hokkaido, City
of Tokyo, Nagano Niigata Snow Alliance and Tokyo Disney Resorts included in the line up.
A calligraphy demonstration where visitors can have their names written in Japanese characters will be given by Kyoto City Tourism at stand D25.
Japan’s Yamanouchi Town, home to the Shiga Kogen snow fields and Japan’s famous snow monkeys, will be exhibiting on nearby stand D19, with a team of local representatives including several okami-san (female owner of ryokan) from local Japanese
inns (ryokan).
