Japanese call for women-only trains
Most female travellers in Japan say trains should be completely segregated according to gender, after a year-long campaign against the scourge of bottom-pinching.
According to The Times, a survey by the country’s largest train operators has found that 64 per cent of women in their 20s and 30s had been molested on public transport, with “most” respondents saying they had been targeted several times in the last 12 months.
The newspaper reports that the problem has been around for “decades”, despite the authorities imposing a possible seven-year prison sentence for offenders.
Many women are reportedly too ashamed to report the crime. While there have been women-only carriages in existence for several years, The Times reports, the latest survey shows most women favour completely segregating trains.
