Jet2 outlines commitment to leisure market
Jet2 is set to increase frequencies, add extra capacity with larger aircraft and explore new routes as it takes delivery of 27 new aircraft in the next few years.
Speaking at the celebrations for the airline’s 10th anniversary at Newcastle Airport, commercial director Steve Lee said leisure and beach destinations would remain the focus for the low-cost airline, which also operates from six other UK airports.
"Deliveries don’t start until next summer and although we have no definite plans for the 737-800s, we remain committed to our key destinations in mainland Spain and the Canary Islands and we could increase our frequencies there. We are also always looking for new destinations," he said.
Around 80% of Jet2’s flights are to beach destinations and the rest to city destinations and this mix is unlikely to change, said Lee.
The airline has no plans to follow the lead of Ryanair and easyJet and expand into the corporate market.
"We have a very strong and loyal leisure customer base and there are still thousands of people who haven’t had the experience of flying with us," Lee added..
"Although we do have customers who are flying on business, we don’t have the frequencies or timings for the corporate market."
He said Jet2 would stay committed to operating in the north of Britain, although would not rule out flying from other airports in the south.
